Overview
The Mercedes-Benz GLA Electric is a premium compact crossover designed to replace the outgoing EQA. Built on the brand's dedicated Mercedes Modular Architecture 800V platform, it marks a significant shift toward purpose-built electric engineering rather than an adapted combustion platform. Positioned as a direct competitor to key rivals such as the Tesla Model Y and Audi Q4 e-tron, the electric GLA aims to establish a benchmark for long-range efficiency, high-speed charging, and advanced software in the luxury compact SUV segment.
Design
Adopting Mercedes' evolved electric design language, the GLA Electric presents a sleeker and more aerodynamic profile than its predecessor by being lower, longer, and wider. It's the first model in the Mercedes compact segment to feature the new iconic grille. Smooth body paneling, flush door handles, and aerodynamically optimized alloy wheel options help reduce drag, while raised ride height and muscular wheel arches maintain standard crossover proportions.
Interior
Inside, the cabin is dominated by Mercedes' latest MBUX Superscreen setup, which spans across the dashboard to provide dedicated displays for the instrument cluster, central infotainment system, and front passenger. The infotainment system incorporates AI-assisted voice control powered by ChatGPT and Google Gemini, as well as video game graphics integration. Material selection heavily features sustainable fabrics, soft-touch leatherette surfaces, and customizable ambient lighting.
Performance & Powertrains
The GLA Electric operates on an advanced 800V electrical system and offers two battery options. An entry-level 58kWh LFP pack and a larger 85kWh NMC battery. Drive configurations include a single-motor rear-wheel-drive variant producing around 268bhp and a dual-motor 4MATIC AWD version delivering up to 354hp. With the smaller battery, maximum driving range sits at 227 miles, while the larger 85kWh battery increases that to 408 miles. The AWD system only decreases the range slightly to 399 miles. The 800V architecture enables DC fast-charging speeds up to 200 or 320 kW depending on the battery.
Practicality
Thanks to the dedicated MMA electric chassis, the interior packaging provides generous cabin room and optimized passenger legroom compared to older converted platforms. The front row seating positioning offers elevated visibility without sacrificing headroom. Boot has a 420 liter capacity which competitive for the compact crossover class, complemented by a large, 107-liter frunk intended to store charging cables and smaller items.
Buying
The Mercedes-Benz GLA Electric is anticipated to arrive in showrooms in late 2026, with starting prices from around £41,600 for standard single-motor 200 variant, sitting around £47,000 for the larger 85kWh battery in the 250+ model and rising above £49,700 for the 350 4MATIC model. Trim levels are expected to align with current Mercedes structures, including Sport, AMG Line, and top-tier AMG Line Premium Plus. The EV Hub recommended configuration is the GLA 250+ Electric. This battery and motor configuration allows for the longest possible range, maximising the value possible and putting above the competition.
