Overview

The Porsche 718 Boxster EV represents a pivotal moment in the transition to electric performance. Designed to replace the internal combustion engine Boxster, this upcoming all-electric roadster aims to prove that dynamic driving engagement, open-top thrills, and low kerb weight can translate with electric power. Expected to launch around 2028, the 718 Boxster EV will sit below the iconic 911 in Porsche's lineup, serving as an accessible entry point to the brand's electric sports car offerings.

Design

The exterior design retains the recognizable low-slung, mid-engine sports car proportions of the ICE 718 while adopting futuristic elements from the Taycan and Macan Electric. Up front, four-point LED headlights set inside sculpted wings frame an aggressive bumper with active cooling flaps. The classic roadster silhouette features short overhangs, prominent rear haunches, and a fabric soft-top roof. At the rear, an active spoiler integrates into a full-width LED light bar, completely omitting exhaust tailpipes.

Interior

Inside, the cabin delivers a minimalist, driver-focused environment using high-end materials like Race-Tex suede and sustainable textiles alongside carbon fibre accents. Ergonomics prioritize a low-slung driving position designed to mimic that of a traditional mid-engine sports car. Technology centers around a curved digital instrument cluster behind the steering wheel and a flush-mounted central infotainment touchscreen running the latest Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system.

Performance & Powertrains

Built on a bespoke 800V electric architecture developed for sports cars, the 718 Boxster EV will feature a custom battery placement located behind the seats to maintain classic mid-engine weight distribution. Entry-level variants will sport a single rear-mounted electric motor delivering power purely to the rear wheels, with anticipated outputs ranging around 400 hp. Higher-tier dual-motor AWD variants are projected to push outputs well past 500 hp, enabling 0-62 mph acceleration in comfortably under 4 seconds. Thanks to the 800V system, ultra-rapid DC fast-charging speeds up to 270 kW will allow 10-80% top-ups in roughly 20 minutes, with target driving ranges exceeding 300 miles.

Practicality

Despite its compact dimensions and soft-top mechanism, the electric platform provides clever packaging benefits. Drivers can expect dual storage compartments, maintaining both a front trunk (frunk) and a usable rear luggage cavity behind the battery pack. Two-seat accommodation provides ample head and legroom for tall occupants, accompanied by essential cabin storage including deep door pockets, integrated cup holders, and a wireless phone charging tray.

Buying

Official pricing has yet to be finalized, but entry-level RWD variants are estimated to start from approximately £75,000, with top-spec performance models climbing past £100,000. Customer deliveries are slated to begin in 2028 following an official unveiling.
