Overview

The BYD Dolphin Surf arrives as a highly competitive contender in the affordable electric city car space, slipping comfortably under £19,000 to challenge rivals like the Dacia Spring, Leapmotor T03, and entry-level Citroën ë-C3. Positioned beneath the larger standard Dolphin hatchback in the brand's line-up, this subcompact hatchback uses BYD's dedicated e-Platform 3.0 to maximize efficiency and passenger volume within such a small footprint. It offers urban commuters a heavily feature-loaded package at a price point that undercuts many mainstream electric superminis.

Design

The Dolphin Surf features a distinctive single-arch profile that goes smoothly from the nose through to the rear. A prominent contour line slashes across the side profile to give the car a squat stance, while the blacked-out C-pillars feature an intricate dot-matrix pattern inspired by ice crystals. The front is defined by clean daytime-running lights, while the rear benefits from a sporty integrated spoiler and modern, full-width LED tail-lights that mimic the premium design seen on more expensive BYD models. Depending on the chosen trim level, the car rides on either 15-inch steel wheels or 16-inch alloy wheels.

Interior

The cabin design mirrors the flowing lines of larger BYD models but relies more much more on durable, basic plastics to meet its low price, though still better than most of its competitors. The focal point of the dashboard is a signature 10.1-inch touchscreen that switches between portrait and landscape modes, loaded with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, 4G connectivity, and voice control. The driver's display is a compact 7-inch digital instrument panel positioned directly behind the steering wheel. The sports seats provide impressive side support and are available with electrical adjustment and heating on higher trims.

Performance & Powertrains

Built around an efficient 8-in-1 integrated electric powertrain, the FWD Dolphin Surf offers two battery capacities with BYD's Blade Battery. The base Active trim pairs a 30kWh battery pack with an 87hp electric motor, delivering a range of 137 miles. Stepping up to the Boost trim retains the 87hp motor but swaps in a larger 43kWh pack, pushing the range up to 200 miles. On a rapid DC charger, the 30kWh version maxes out at 65kW to charge from 10% to 80% in 38 minutes, while the larger 43kWh battery can accept up to 85kW to complete the same charge in 30 minutes.

Practicality

Measuring 3,990mm in length, 1,720mm in width, and 1,590mm in height, the Dolphin Surf carves out an exceptionally roomy cabin for its size. Rear legroom is particularly generous, beating out larger superminis and allowing two adults to travel comfortably, though the car is strictly a four-seater with only two rear seatbelts. ISOFIX mounting anchor points are standard across the three passenger seats. The boot provides a competitive 308-litre cargo capacity with a deep floor and a somewhat narrow opening, expanding to a maximum of 1,037 litres with the rear seatbacks folded flat, boosted by over 20 smaller storage cubbies and dual cupholders throughout the cabin.

Buying

Pricing for the BYD Dolphin Surf starts at an incredibly aggressive £18,650 for the entry-level Active trim, moving up to £21,975 for the mid-tier Boost, and topping out at £23,975 for the high-spec Comfort model. Standard safety kit across all versions is extensive, including adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, lane-keep assist, and six airbags. All backed by a 6-year or 94,000-mile vehicle warranty alongside an 8-year battery warranty. The EV Hub recommended configuration is the mid-range Boost trim, as it unlocks the highest 200-mile range and faster 85kW charging for a minimal price increase.
