The Mercedes-Benz eCitan represents the German brand's entry into the competitive small electric commercial vehicle segment. Sharing its underlying platform with the Renault Kangoo E-Tech and Nissan Townstar EV, the eCitan aims to deliver premium, refined urban transport for fleets and small businesses. Positioned above its mainstream platform siblings, it combines compact dimensions with sophisticated technology, positioning itself as an upscale choice in the market.
Design
Visually, the eCitan distinguishes itself from its platform counterparts with distinct Mercedes-Benz styling. The front features a prominent radiator grille carrying a large three-pointed star logo, flanked by swept-back headlights that can be upgraded to High Performance LEDs. Smooth body panels, clean character lines, and functional unpainted or body-coloured bumpers give the vehicle a purposeful look suitable for commercial applications. It is available in short (L1) and long (L2) body lengths, maintaining a cohesive design across both wheelbases.
Interior
The cab is among the most refined in its class, incorporating signature Mercedes-Benz controls, circular air vents, and a multi-function steering wheel. Central to the dashboard is the 7-inch MBUX touchscreen infotainment system, offering responsive navigation, smartphone integration, and intuitive voice controls. Cabin storage is practical, including an overhead compartment and dashboard slots. Build quality is solid, providing excellent noise insulation that suppresses road and wind noise.
Performance & Powertrains
Power comes from a single front-mounted electric motor producing 122 hp and 245 Nm of instant torque, ensuring responsive acceleration. Energy is supplied by a 45 kWh battery, delivering a range of up to 176 miles. 3 regenerative braking modes and 2 drive modes allow drivers to tailor energy consumption. Maximum DC rapid charging at 75 kW allows a 10% to 80% charge in approximately 38 minutes.
Practicality
The battery packaging under the floor ensures zero compromise to internal load volume compared to standard diesel variants. Cargo volume ranges from 2.9 cubic metres in the L1 body style up to 3.62 cubic metres in the L2 version, capable of accommodating up to 2 Euro pallets. Maximum payload capacity ranges between 448kg on L1 models and 616kg on L2 variants equipped with a heavier-duty axle. Loading access is facilitated by asymmetric 60:40 rear barn doors and single or twin sliding side doors.
Buying
Prices for the Mercedes-Benz eCitan start from £33,995 excluding VAT and after government plug-in van grants. The lineup is split into Progressive and Premium trims. Progressive includes MBUX navigation, active brake assist, and a reversing camera as standard. Premium adds 16-inch alloy wheels, body-coloured bumpers, and LED lighting packages. The EV Hub recommended configuration is the L2 Panel Van in Premium trim, which maximizes total load capability and resale appeal while adding crucial aesthetic and lighting upgrades for daily fleet usage.
