The Subaru Solterra represents the Japanese brand's debut entry into the fully electric market. Developed as part of a joint venture alongside the Toyota bZ4X, the Solterra sits on the co-developed Subaru e-Global Platform. Positioned as a rugged, family-sized electric SUV, it aims to retain Subaru's traditional heritage of off-road capability and signature AWD performance. Operating within a fiercely competitive segment against rivals like the Skoda Enyaq, Hyundai IONIQ 5, and Nissan Ariya, the Solterra differentiates itself by making dual-motor AWD standard equipment across the entire model line-up, however this does come at the cost of range and value.
Design
Exterior styling for the Solterra leans heavily into an angular, utilitarian aesthetic, staying true to Subaru's adventurous ethos. The front is defined by a hexagonal closed-off grille bordered by sharp LED headlights with distinctive daytime running light signatures. Heavy black plastic cladding wraps aggressively around the front bumper, extending across the oversized wheel arches and lower door sills to the rear wheel arches. This protection serves a dual purpose, visually reducing the body's mass while protecting body panels from road debris. The roofline slopes gently toward a split ducktail rear spoiler. Prominent character lines stretch down the profile, meeting full-width rear LED taillights that bite into the rear haunches, completing a bold, rugged stance.
Interior
Inside the cabin, the Solterra offers a departure from traditional Subaru layouts. A high-set 7-inch digital driver information display sits far forward near the base of the windscreen, designed to be viewed over the top of the compact steering wheel rather than through it. Material quality is noticeably upgraded over historical Subaru models, featuring woven fabric dash coverings, metallic switchgear trim, and soft-touch points, though glossy black plastic remains around the centre console. Dominating the middle of the dash is a high-definition 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto. Physical toggles are retained for critical climate controls, ensuring ease of operation while driving.

Every Solterra utilizes a dual-motor setup, mounting an 80kW electric motor on each axle to generate a combined total system output of 215 bhp and 336 Nm of torque. Acceleration from 0 to 62 mph takes 6.9 seconds, reaching a capped top speed of 100 mph. Energy is stored in a 71kWh battery pack. Range figures vary by trim level, offering up to 289 miles on standard 18-inch wheels and 257 miles on larger 20-inch alloy fitments, both are very underwhelming by modern standards. Maximum DC rapid charging speeds peak at 150 kW, enabling a 10 to 80% top-up in roughly 30 minutes under ideal conditions. Driving dynamics prioritise compliant, quiet cruising with standard Subaru X-MODE off-road control including Hill Descent settings, paired with a 210mm of ground clearance for legitimate light off-road ability.
Practicality
The Solterra benefits from its dedicated EV architecture, featuring a stretched 2,850mm wheelbase and completely flat interior floor. Passenger space in both rows is exceptionally generous, providing class-leading rear legroom that easily accommodates tall adults. Boot capacity sits at 452 litres for entry-level models, dropping slightly to 441 litres on higher trims with upgraded audio hardware, expandable via 60:40 split-folding rear seats. While there is no frunk under the bonnet, dedicated under-floor boot storage keeps charging cables tidy. Cabin storage includes a large open tray beneath the floating centre console, deep door bins, and a covered wireless phone charging dock.
Buying
Pricing for the Subaru Solterra starts from £52,505 on the road for the entry Limited trim, increasing to £55,505 for the top-tier Touring trim. Equipment levels across both specifications are comprehensively high. The entry Limited trim includes 18-inch alloy wheels, the 12.3-inch infotainment display with navigation, a 360-degree panoramic camera, heated front and rear outer seats, a heated steering wheel, a power tailgate, a heat pump, and the Subaru Safety Sense driver assistance package as standard. Stepping up to the Touring trim adds 20-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic glass roof, synthetic leather upholstery, memory driver seating, and a premium Harman Kardon audio system.
