Overview

The Mazda CX-6e is the Japanese brand's upcoming all-electric mid-size SUV, designed to sit alongside the 6e fastback saloon in Mazda's expanding zero-emission line-up. Built on the EPA1 dedicated EV platform developed in partnership with Changan, the CX-6e aims to establish Mazda as a serious contender in the electric crossover market. Targeted directly at established class leaders such as the Tesla Model Y, Volkswagen ID.4, and Hyundai IONIQ 5, the CX-6e combines traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern EV technology to offer a premium, design-led alternative in the executive family SUV segment.

Design

Adapting Mazda's Kodo design philosophy for an electric SUV profile, the CX-6e features clean, sculpted surfaces and balanced proportions. Up front, it features a smooth front with slender LED headlights and an illuminated grille line. Aerodynamics are central to the design, incorporating frameless doors, flush-fitting pop-out door handles, and subtle cooling vents integrated into the bonnet and rear pillars to smooth airflow. Around the side, gloss black wheel arch cladding frames 19-inch aerodynamic alloy wheels, while the rear is defined by a full-width LED light bar, an integrated roof spoiler, and an electrically extending rear spoiler.

Interior

Inside, the CX-6e adopts a minimalist, driver-focused cockpit that heavily reduces physical controls in favour of screens. Dominating the dashboard is a 14.6-inch central touchscreen housing the infotainment, climate controls, and vehicle settings, complemented by a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster and a projected colour head-up display. Material quality is upmarket, utilizing tactile vegan leather or optional Nappa leather and suede finishes, alongside ambient lighting with 256 customizable colours. Technology highlights include a 14-speaker Sony audio system, a full panoramic glass roof, a 50W air-cooled wireless phone charger, and a dedicated rear-seat touchscreen for independent climate and seat heating controls.

Performance & Powertrains

The CX-6e is powered by a single rear-mounted electric motor delivering 258 hp and 290 Nm of torque to the rear wheels. Energy is supplied by a 78kWh LFP battery, providing an estimated driving range of up to 300 miles. Acceleration from 0-62 mph is completed in approximately 7.9 seconds, with a top speed of 115 mph. The CX-6e supports DC fast charging speeds up to 195 kW, enabling a 10% to 80% recharge in roughly 24 minutes.

Practicality

Designed around a dedicated long-wheelbase electric architecture, the CX-6e delivers impressive passenger space with a completely flat floor and generous legroom for adult occupants. The main rear boot offers 468 litres of cargo volume under the parcel shelf, expanding to 1,434 litres when the 60/40 split-folding rear seats are lowered. Practicality is enhanced by an 80-litre frunk under the bonnet, ideal for keeping dirty charging cables out of the main luggage compartment. Cabin storage includes large door pockets, a deep central armrest console, and rear seatback pockets.

Buying

Pricing for the Mazda CX-6e is expected to start at around £40,000 for the entry trim level. Order books are slated to open towards late 2026, with customer deliveries following shortly after. Following Mazda's streamlined specification strategy, the CX-6e will likely be offered in standard Takumi and high-spec Takumi Plus trims, each featuring a comprehensive list of standard equipment including 360-degree cameras, heated and ventilated seats, and driver assistance systems.
