Overview

The Toyota C-HR+ marks a gradual step forward for Toyota as it expands its dedicated battery-electric vehicle line-up. Sitting in the highly-competitive C-segment crossover class, it transitions the familiar angular silhouette of the C-HR into a full EV built on a dedicated EV architecture. Competing directly against rivals like the Volvo EC40, Nissan Leaf, and Peugeot e-3008, the C-HR+ attempts to balance eye-catching coupe-SUV styling with sharp daily usability. It targets buyers looking for a distinctive design language without sacrificing the Japanese brand's standard reputation for build quality and long-term reliability.

Design

Toyota has retained the daring attitude of the hybrid C-HR while combining it with a design for the electric era. The front end adopts the brand's Hammerhead design with razor-sharp C-shaped LED light signatures and a closed-off upper grille that aids aerodynamic efficiency. Dynamic, interlocking crease lines sweep along the side profile, leading toward hidden rear door handles embedded into the C-pillar. Flared wheel arches accommodate alloy sizes ranging from standard 18-inch aerodynamic designs up to bold 20-inch options on top-tier specifications. The roofline tapers toward a split rear spoiler and a full-width LED light bar that spans the sculpted tailgate. Contrast two-tone paint options allow buyers to black-out the roof and rear section entirely for a bit of extra styling.

Interior

Stepping inside reveals a cabin heavily centered around the driver, featuring a high-set center console and a modern digital layout. The focal point is a 14-inch multimedia touchscreen running Toyota's latest infotainment software, paired with a digital driver's display. Cabin materials are a mix of high-grade synthetic leather and recycled fabrics, creating a premium tactile feel while reinforcing its sustainable production methods. Practical cabin storage includes dual inductive wireless phone charging pads on top of the central floating stack, alongside a large lower storage tray. Physical controls remain intact for quick access to climate settings. While build quality feels reassuringly robust, the sleek exterior styling results in slightly smaller rear side windows, giving the back row a darker, cozier atmosphere.

Performance & Powertrains

The C-HR+ platform offers two FWD single-motor powertrains designed around efficiency. The standard Icon specification features a 58kWh battery paired with a 167 bhp front electric motor. Stepping up to Design or Excel grades introduces a larger 77kWh battery combined with a more powerful 224 bhp front motor. Official range figures span from 284 miles for the smaller unit up to an impressive 376 miles for the 77kWh battery setup on smaller wheels. Maximum DC fast-charging capacity reaches up to 150 kW, allowing a 10% to 80% replenishment in roughly 29 to 32 minutes. The low center of gravity keeps body roll well in check through corners, offering predictable, comfortable handling calibrated for everyday commuting.

Practicality

Given its swooping coupe-crossover roofline, passenger and cargo capacity lean toward style rather than sheer maximum volume. Luggage capacity measures at 416 litres with the rear seats in place, providing enough usable room for several suitcases or weekly shopping trips. The 60/40 split-folding rear seats fold down to accommodate longer items, though the boot opening has a fairly high loading lip. Rear legroom is adequate for average-sized adults, but headroom can feel restricted for taller passengers due to the sloping rear roof structure. Up front, space is generous, backed by deep door bins and a multi-level center console, although traditionalists should note the absence of a conventional passenger glovebox.

Buying

The Toyota C-HR+ starts at £34,495 for the entry-level Icon trim with the 58kWh battery. Upgrading to the mid-spec Design grade raises the price to £36,995, adding the larger 77kWh battery, power tailgate, and rear privacy glass. The top-of-the-range Excel configuration is priced from £40,995, introducing full synthetic leather, larger alloy wheels, and advanced parking driver assistance features. The EV Hub recommended configuration is the mid-tier Design trim with the 77 kWh battery. It offers the ultimate sweet spot, delivering up to 376 miles of range, updated convenience features, and optimal long-distance driving capabilities without pushing into premium price brackets.
