Overview

The Cupra Tavascan is the Spanish brand's flagship all-electric SUV coupe. Injecting a bold design into the highly competitive mid-size EV market. Built upon the VW Group's dedicated MEB platform, it shares its underpinnings with the Volkswagen ID.5 and Skoda Enyaq Coupe. However, the Tavascan distinguishes itself by offering a sharper identity and a driver-focused character that blends sporty aesthetics with everyday family usability. It enters a fierce segment containing established rivals like the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Polestar 2.

Design

The exterior of the Cupra Tavascan is aggressive with muscular lines that break away from a standard SUV design. Upfront, it features striking three-triangle matrix LED headlights and an illuminated Cupra badge nestled in deep aerodynamic scoops and functional vents. The side profile has a sweeping, athletic coupe roofline paired with prominent blacked-out A-pillars. Sculpted doors flow into the rear, where a full-width light bar illuminates another badge. Wheel choices range from standard 19-inch Vulcano, up to intricate 21-inch Etna forged designs.

Interior

The cabin features a progressive, structural layout dominated by a copper-coloured 'spine' dashboard that sweeps downwards between the driver and front passenger. Immersive wrap-around ambient lighting flows through the door panels. Technology is centered around a massive 15-inch central touchscreen, running heavily updated software with quick-access favourite menus along the top bar. A compact 5.3-inch digital driver's display provides core driving data, together with an available head-up display. Materials are highly tactile, using a blend of sustainable microsuede and textured, premium plastic. However, the user interface draws criticism for relying on haptic sliders for volume and climate controls, along with a shared driver-side window switch setup that has an extra button to control the rear windows.

Performance & Powertrains

The Tavascan comes only with a 77kWh lithium-ion battery but is offered in two distinct powertrain configurations. The V1 and V2 trims use a single RWD motor producing 286hp, achieving 0-62mph in 6.8 seconds and delivering the longest range of up to 352 miles. The high-performance VZ specification introduces a dual-motor, AWD system boosting the total output to 340hp and lowering the 0-62mph sprint to 5.5 seconds. However this does reduce the maximum range to 299 miles. Both models use a 400V architecture to support a peak charging speed of up to 135kW, allowing a 10% to 80% charge in roughly 28 minutes. On the road, the driving favours high-speed highway refinement and stable handling rather than the razor-sharp cornering agility. Regen braking strength can be controlled by paddles on the steering wheel, allowing waisted energy from braking to be recovered back into the battery.

Practicality

Despite the sloping roofline, the interior ensures the Tavascan remains highly capable as a family vehicle. The front passengers enjoy a spacious layout with deeply bolstered bucket seats, while those in the second row get generous legroom and a completely flat floor, meaning three adults can sit comfortably side-by-side. The roofline means taller passengers will find headroom slightly restricted compared to a boxier SUV, but it remains adequate for average-sized adults. Boot space stands at a substantial 540 litres, offering a large, square opening. When the rear seats are folded down, the space opens into a flat loading surface. There is no frunk under the bonnet, but charging cables can be stored in the compartment under the boot.

Buying

Pricing for the Cupra Tavascan starts from £47,350 for the entry-level V1 trim, which includes 19-inch wheels, bucket seats, and the 15-inch display. The V2 trim starts from £53,845, adding 21-inch wheels, matrix LED headlights, dynamic chassis control, a Sennheiser premium audio system, and a panoramic sunroof. Performance-focused dual-motor VZ trims begin at £55,945 for the VZ1 and climb up to £60,845 for the fully loaded VZ2 version. The EV Hub recommended configuration is the single-motor RWD V1 trim. This setup maximizes value and provides the highest possible range of 352 miles, while still offering excellent standard equipment, adequate power, and the exact same eye-catching design without the steep price increase linked to higher trims.
