Overview

The BYD Seal is an electric sports saloon positioned directly within one of the most competitive segments of the EV market. Taking on established rivals like the Tesla Model 3, Polestar 2, and BMW i3, the Seal is built upon BYD's dedicated e-Platform 3.0. A distinguishing technical highlight is its advanced cell-to-body architecture, which integrates the battery pack directly into the vehicle's frame to optimize space efficiency, enhance rigidity, and lower the center of gravity.

Design

The exterior of the Seal matches to the brand's Ocean range, which means a fluid, aerodynamic silhouette, flowing lines and smooth body panels. The front end has a distinctive X-shaped nose, sculpted bonnet lines, and intricate daytime running lights. Along the side profile, the saloon features a dynamic waistline, flush-fitting door handles, and a sweeping roof that tapers neatly into the rear. The rear styling incorporates a full-width LED light bar with a dot-matrix pattern resembling water droplets, complemented by a prominent lower diffuser that underlines its sporty aesthetic.

Interior

Inside, the cabin delivers a high-technology environment centered around a signature 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen that can electrically rotate between portrait and landscape orientations. Materials feel premium throughout, with extensive use of soft-touch surfaces and ergonomically sculpted sports seats wrapped in leather. Driver information is handled by a separate 10.25-inch digital display. A full-length panoramic glass roof floods the cabin with natural light, while high-spec variants benefit from a 12-speaker Dynaudio premium sound system. Acoustic glass helps keep wind and road noise minimal at speeds.

Performance & Powertrains

The Seal features an 82kWh LFP Blade Battery, highly regarded for its structural strength and safety. The powertrain line-up consists of two options. A RWD, Design trim, powered by a single rear-mounted electric motor delivering 308 bhp and 360 Nm of torque, enabling a 0-62 mph acceleration time of 5.9 seconds and achieving a range of 354 miles. And, an AWD, Excellence trims that adds an extra front motor to produce a combined output of 523 bhp and 670 Nm of torque. This cuts the 0-62 mph sprint to a rapid 3.8 seconds, while returning a range of 323 miles. Both models use an 800V system to allow rapid charging speeds at 150 kW, which translates to a 10% to 80% charge in around 37 minutes. The Excellence trim features an intelligent Torque Adaption Control system that micro-adjusts torque delivery to minimize wheelspin and sharpen cornering agility.

Practicality

Rear passengers enjoy generous legroom thanks to a completely flat floor and a long 2,920mm wheelbase, though headroom for taller occupants is slightly restricted by the sloping roofline. The rear boot offers a 485-litre cargo capacity accessed via a traditional, small saloon boot lid. For smaller items, a 53-litre frunk under the bonnet provides an ideal spot to store charging cables. Internal storage includes twin wireless smartphone charging pads, a floating central console with lower storage, and deep door bins.

Buying

The BYD Seal lineup is straightforward, offering an exceptionally high level of standard equipment across both trims. Pricing sits in an aggressive bracket that undercuts premium European rivals, with the entry-level Design model starting at £45,730 and the Excellence AWD version positioned at £48,730. All vehicles come with a comprehensive six-year manufacturer warranty and an eight-year battery warranty. The EV Hub Recommended Configuration is the entry-level Design trim. It offers the maximum range of 354 miles, ample performance with its 308 bhp motor, and retains the exact same premium interior technology, rotating touchscreen, and panoramic roof as the more expensive version, presenting the strongest overall value.
