Overview

The Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology represents a milestone transition for one of the automotive world's most enduring icons. By electrifying the famous Geländewagen, Mercedes-Benz has preserved the traditional, boxy body-on-frame character while integrating a quad-motor electric powertrain. Positioned at the upper pinnacle of the luxury off-road market, it targets buyers who need uncompromising capability alongside zero tailpipe emissions. Rather than rebuilding the G-Class as a streamlined electric vehicle, Mercedes retained the iconic silhouette, delivering unmatched off-road features like individual-wheel torque vectoring and the headline G-Turn.

Design

The exterior styling remains faithful to the timeless G-Class profile from 1979. Up front, an optional panel grille with an illuminated contour replaces the traditional radiator layout, flanked by signature round LED headlights. Small aerodynamic adjustments have been made to optimize efficiency, including a subtly raised bonnet, fresh air vents around the wheel arches, and redesigned A-pillar cladding. At the rear, the conventional spare wheel cover can be substituted with a rectangular storage box designed to store charging cables.

Interior

Inside the cabin, the G580 merges rugged off-road utility with luxury craftsmanship. High-grade Nappa leather trims, heated sports seats, and customizable 64-colour ambient lighting establish a premium atmosphere. The dashboard is dominated by dual 12.3-inch displays powered by the latest MBUX infotainment software, complete with off-road telemetry and a 'transparent bonnet' camera view that projects the terrain directly underneath the front axle. Grab handles and prominent toggle switches remain central on the dash, though the traditional switches now activate specific electric features like G-Turn and G-Steering.

Performance & Powertrains

Propulsion is delivered by 4 individually controlled electric motors, generating a combined output of 587 hp and a massive 1,164 Nm of torque. Despite a heavy curb weight exceeding 3,000 kg, the quad-motor configuration rockets the SUV from 0 to 62 mph in 4.7 seconds, up to a limited top speed of 112 mph. Energy is stored in a 116 kWh battery pack integrated into the frame, providing a range of up to 291 miles. DC rapid charging capability tops out at 200 kW, enabling a 10 to 80% recharge in roughly 32 minutes. Off-road, virtual differential locks and low-range gearing provide exceptional control, while a maximum wading depth of 850 mm beats its petrol and diesel siblings.

Practicality

Cabin space is generous for 5 occupants, offering commanding headroom and an elevated seating position. The boot provides 555 litres of luggage capacity with the rear seats in place, expanding up to 1,990 litres with the 60/40 split-folding rear bench collapsed. Access to the cargo hold is via the classic side-hinged rear tailgate, which requires more clearance behind the vehicle to open fully than a traditional boot lid.

Buying

Pricing for the Mercedes-Benz G580 Electric starts at £154,870 for the AMG Line Premium Plus trim. Standard equipment is exceptionally generous, including a Burmester 3D surround sound system, keyless entry, dynamic adaptive suspension, and a complete suite of active driver assistance technologies. The EV Hub recommended configuration is the AMG Line Premium Plus, which provides the complete quad-motor capability, full MBUX tech package, and maximum usable range without the steep price premium of the limited-run launch trim.
