Overview

The Audi A6 e-tron represents a significant shift for Audi's executive class, transitioning the long-running nameplate into a fully electric model line. Available as both a sleek Sportback model and a traditional Avant estate, it sits on the sophisticated Premium Platform Electric co-developed with Porsche. This low-slung executive contender is positioned squarely to challenge rivals like the BMW i5 and Porsche Taycan, prioritising supreme long-distance cruising comfort and efficiency over outright performance.

Design

The A6 e-tron achieves an incredibly low drag coefficient, making it the most aerodynamic production Audi to date. The exterior design features a prominent, inverted enclosed 'Singleframe' grille flanked by thin, split-level digital Matrix LED headlights that can be customised. Sharp body lines and a bold stance give it a sporty look, especially with the large 21-inch alloy wheels available on higher trims. At the rear, a continuous, full-width OLED light strip can also be customised by dynamic animations and comes with an automated warning system for tailgating vehicles. The traditional door mirrors can also be replaced with aerodynamic virtual camera units on top-tier models. The Avant estate variant sports a steep-raked windscreen, flush door handles, and muscular rear haunches that flow seamlessly into a steeply angled D-pillar, maintaining an impressive 0.24 Cd drag coefficient which is exceptionally low for an estate.

Interior

The cabin centers around a dramatic, curved panoramic OLED display that integrates an 11.9-inch driver's virtual cockpit and a 14.5-inch central infotainment touchscreen. Higher specifications add a dedicated 10.9-inch display for the front passenger, though entry-level models feature a prominent black plastic panel in its place. Material quality is generally excellent with an emphasis on leather-free upholstery, though there is an abundance of gloss black plastic and occasional lower-grade materials on lower parts of the centre console. Standout tech options include an augmented reality head-up display, a Bang & Olufsen 3D sound system with headrest-mounted speakers, and a panoramic glass roof with switchable segment-by-segment transparency.

Performance & Powertrains

Built on an advanced 800-volt architecture, the A6 e-tron lineup offers outstanding charging speeds alongside massive range figures. The model structure consists of three core setups:

  • Sport: Features an 83 kWh battery paired with a 326 hp rear motor, delivering a 0-62 mph time of 6.0 seconds and a range of up to 382 miles for the Sportback and 361 miles for the Avant.
  • Performance: Utilises a larger 100 kWh battery pack with a 380 hp rear motor, achieving 0-62 mph in 5.4 seconds and a class-leading range of up to 464 miles for the Sportback or 444 miles for the Avant model.
  • quattro: Uses the 100 kWh battery with twin electric motors for all-wheel drive, boosting output to 462 hp during launch control to hit 0-62 mph in 4.5 seconds, while retaining a range of 438 miles.

Charging the smaller battery tops out at 225 kW DC, while the larger pack can accept rapid charging at 270 kW. This allows both variants to replenish from 10% to 80% in just 21 minutes. On the road, the driving experience is whisper-quiet and focused on absolute refinement, effortlessly soaking up road imperfections, though the light steering gives limited feedback on twisting roads compared to a BMW i5.

Practicality

Thanks to its dedicated EV platform, the A6 e-tron features a completely flat rear floor, ensuring excellent legroom for rear passengers. The Sportback variant offers a practical liftback tailgate opening into a 502-litre boot, which expands to 1,330 litres with the rear seats folded down. The Avant estate increases flexibility further, providing up to 1,422 litres of total cargo volume. Up front, a small 27-litre frunk under the bonnet serves as a dedicated storage space for charging cables, keeping the main luggage area clear.

Buying

Prices for the Audi A6 e-tron start at £63,365 on-the-road for the entry-level Sportback, with the Avant positioning itself with a premium of around £1,800 to start at £65,165. Trim levels progress through Sport, S line, Black Edition, and the luxury-focused Vorsprung tier which can push prices beyond £80,000. The EV Hub recommended configuration is the S line Performance trim. The Performance powertrain provides the best range from the 100 kWh battery without the added cost of the quattro trim. Opting for the mid-level S line trim balances the design and upgraded sports seats while avoiding the steep price premium and harsher ride of the larger wheels found on Vorsprung models.
