Overview
The Smart #2 marks the return of the iconic two-seat ultra-compact city car formula, directly succeeding the discontinued Smart Fortwo EQ. Positioned beneath the larger #1 crossover, the #2 returns the brand to its original roots. Developed under the joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Geely, it is designed strictly as a premium, highly manoeuvrable urban vehicle aimed at dense metropolitan environments. Set to make its full debut at the Paris Motor Show ahead of market launch, it brings high-end materials and modern battery technology to the microscopic A-segment city car class.
Design
Measuring just 2,792 mm from nose to tail, the Smart #2 retains the classic 'wheels-at-the-corners' stance that defined its predecessors. Created by Mercedes-Benz designers, the exterior blends traditional proportions with the brand's modern design language. Smooth, rounded surfaces are framed by distinctive triangular LED headlights and a simplified front motif. Visible structural elements pay homage to the original Tridion safety cell, while frameless windows, flush-fitting door handles, and a two-tone body finish reinforce its premium positioning. Short overhangs and a stubby bonnet accentuate its diminutive footprint, giving it a distinctive silhouette that remains instantly recognizable.
Interior
Because of its tiny footprint, the cabin is strictly configured for two occupants but still prioritizes a sense of openness. Moving away from the utilitarian plastics of previous city cars, the cabin incorporates premium trims, including options for leather upholstery, translucent finishes, and metallic accents. The dashboard features a swept S-shaped layout homage to the original Fortwo, crowned by a high-definition central infotainment touchscreen that houses primary climate and media controls. Ergonomics are tailored for easy access, with elevated seating positions providing strong forward visibility. A uniquely designed central bench integrates covered storage and window toggles between the driver and passenger.
Performance & Powertrains
Underpinned by Geely's new Electric Compact Architecture, the Smart #2 utilizes a rear-mounted single electric motor delivering 80 bhp. Top speed is electronically capped at 87 mph. Power is supplied by a 35kWh LFP battery pack sourced from CATL, which delivers a targeted range of 186 miles, or 300 km. DC rapid charging allows a 10 to 80 percent top-up in under 20 minutes, while Vehicle-to-Load capability enables the battery to power external electrical devices. A five-link independent rear suspension setup is utilized to improve ride composure over rough urban tarmac.
Practicality
Cabin layout is restricted to two seats, which allows the short cabin to maximize legroom and headroom for both driver and passenger. Cargo capacity is intentionally designed for daily urban errands, accommodated via a split-opening rear tailgate that simplifies loading in tight parking spots. Storage within the passenger compartment includes a deep glovebox, door pockets, and dedicated cubbies set within the center console bench. While maximum load volume remains compact compared to traditional five-door superminis, the passenger seat folds flat to allow transport of longer items when required.
Buying
Official pricing will be confirmed closer to the vehicle's launch, with estimates placing the entry-level model from approximately £20,000. Trim levels are expected to follow the brand's established naming convention, moving from standard equipment lines up to flagship variants with upgraded interior textiles and advanced driver assistance systems. Deliveries are scheduled to commence in 2027 following its world debut.
