Overview
The Renault 5 E-Tech marks a triumphant return of an automotive icon, reimagined as a fully electric B-segment hatchback. Positioned as a stylish, accessible entry point into electric mobility, it replaces the long-running Zoe while successfully bridging the gap between retro nostalgia and modern technology. By utilizing the dedicated AmpR Small platform, Renault has created a car that prioritizes personality and driving engagement without the high price tag.
Design
The exterior design is a masterclass in modern-retro aesthetics, translating the 1971 original's silhouette into a new, futuristic form. It features distinctive 'human-like' LED headlights that perform a welcoming sequence and vertical rear light clusters that improve aerodynamics by reducing air turbulence. The flared wheel arches pay homage to the legendary R5 Turbo, giving the car a planted, purposeful stance. Modern flourishes include a battery charge indicator integrated into the bonnet, located where the air intake sat on the original car, and 18-inch alloy wheels as standard across the range. The colour palette is equally bold, headlined by Pop Yellow and Pop Green, ensuring the car stands out in urban environments. Other, more normal, colours are also available.
Interior
Inside, the Renault 5 E-Tech balances funky design with high-quality materials and advanced digital interfaces. The two-tier dashboard features horizontal stitching reminiscent of the classic model, while the seats on higher trims are upholstered in denim-style fabric made from 100% recycled plastic bottles. Technology is centered around a dual-screen setup consisting of a customisable digital driver display and a 10.1-inch central touchscreen running the OpenR Link system with Google built-in. This system includes native Google Maps for seamless EV route planning and a ChatGPT-powered AI assistant named "Reno". Unique touches include an "e-pop" drive selector on the steering column and a 3D-textured headlining.

Performance & Powertrains
Renault offers two distinct powertrain configurations to suit different driving needs. The entry-level Urban Range features a 40kWh battery paired with a 120hp electric motor, delivering a range of approximately 192 miles and 0-62mph acceleration in 9.0 seconds. The Comfort Range upgrades to a 52kWh battery and a 150hp motor, extending the range to 252 miles and dropping the 0-62mph sprint to 7.9 seconds. Charging capabilities are competitive; the 40kWh version supports 80kW DC rapid charging, while the 52kWh version reaches 100kW, allowing for a 15-80% charge in about 30 minutes. Notably, the car features a multi-link rear suspension setup, which is rare in this segment, providing a level of handling agility and ride sophistication that rivals much more expensive vehicles.
Practicality
Measuring just 3.92 meters in length, the Renault 5 is a dedicated city car, yet it offers respectable interior space for its dimensions. The boot provides a 326-litre capacity, which includes a dedicated underfloor compartment for charging cables, and the rear seats feature a 60/40 split-folding mechanism to expand the load area to 1,106 litres. Front occupants enjoy ample head and legroom, though the rear is more suited to children or shorter adults on longer journeys. Interior storage is well-considered with a 19-litre central storage bin and various cubbies, though the lack of rear door bins and USB ports in the back limits its utility as a primary family vehicle. One standout novelty is the optional woven wicker basket designed specifically for carrying baguettes!
Buying
The Renault 5 E-Tech represents exceptional value, with pricing starting at £22,995 for the Evolution trim. The lineup is structured into Evolution, Techno+, and Iconic 5+ trims, with a limited-run Roland Garros special edition at the top of the range. The Evolution trim is well-equipped with the 10.1-inch screen and 18-inch alloys, but the Techno+ is the EV Hub recommended configuration as it adds a heat pump, wireless phone charging, and a reversing camera. Higher trims also unlock the V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) and V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid) functionalities, allowing the car to power external devices or feed energy back into the home. For most buyers, the 52kWh Comfort Range model in Techno+ trim offers the best balance of range, performance, and daily usability.
