Overview

The MG4 EV Urban enters the competitive electric hatchback segment as a budget-focused, FWD alternative tailored for everyday usability. Positioning itself as a ultra-accessible entry point into electric driving, it sits below other compact hatchbacks to directly rival city-focused EVs such as the BYD Dolphin, Citroën ë-C3, and Renault 5 E-Tech. Utilizing a dedicated, cell-to-body LFP platform, the MG4 EV Urban prioritizes space efficiency and accessible pricing over extreme performance.

Design

The exterior of the MG4 EV Urban presents a clean, squat stance by pushing the wheels far out to the four corners of the chassis. Its front adopts a smooth, aerodynamic bumper flanked by sharp LED headlights. Around the side, a sweeping shoulder line connects to a long 2,750mm wheelbase, visually lowering the hatchback's proportions. Entry models ride on 16-inch alloy wheels fitted with aerodynamic covers, while higher trims step up to 17-inch alloy wheels. The rear profile is dominated by a full-width LED lightbar that stretches across the tailgate.

Interior

Inside the cabin, the dashboard features a 12.8-inch HD central infotainment touchscreen alongside a 7-inch digital driver instrument display. The dashboard uses textured soft-touch materials, while physical shortcut buttons remain underneath the central screen. Standard tech includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Base variants feature durable black and grey fabric upholstery, while top-tier specifications add heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a wireless smartphone charging pad, and a 360° surround-view camera.

Performance & Powertrains

The MG4 EV Urban is offered with two LFP battery configurations driving a single front-mounted electric motor. The Comfort Standard Range is equipped with a 43kWh battery pack paired with a 110kW motor. It achieves a range of 201 miles and accelerates from 0-62mph in approximately 9 seconds. DC rapid charging tops out at 82kW, allowing a 10% to 80% recharge in under 30 minutes. The Long Range model features a larger 54kWh battery and motor producing 118kW and 250Nm of torque. It delivers up to 258 miles of range. Maximum DC rapid charging reaches 87kW, replenishing 10% to 80% capacity in 28 minutes. A heat pump and Vehicle-to-Load power delivery come fitted as standard across the range.

Practicality

Despite its compact sub-4.4m footprint, the lengthened wheelbase generates significant cabin space, offering legroom for tall adult passengers in both row positions alongside dual ISOFIX mounts. Boot capacity provides 382 litres of usable cargo volume in standard setup, expanding to a maximum capacity of 1,364 litres with the rear seats folded flat. An integrated 98-litre underfloor storage compartment sits beneath the main boot floor to store charging cables out of sight.

Buying

The MG4 EV Urban lineup starts at £22,995 for the entry Comfort Standard Range model. Mid-tier Comfort Long Range specifications begin from £25,495, while the range-topping Premium Long Range variant comes in at £27,995. The EV Hub Recommended Configuration is the Comfort Long Range model. It offers the best balance of value and capability, providing the larger 54kWh battery and standard heat pump without incurring the higher cost of the top-tier trim's cosmetic and tech additions.
