Overview

The Citroën ë-C3 is a game-changing entry into the affordable EV market, intentionally designed to lower the barrier to EV ownership without forcing buyers into a severely compromised micro-car. Built on the cost-efficient Stellantis Smart Car platform, this compact hatchback positions itself with a trendy, raised crossover stance. It successfully undercuts mainstream electric supermini rivals by delivering on the essentials, whilst keeping very respectable range, and exceptional value. By focusing on simplicity and core driving rather than a complex tech overload, it serves as a highly competent, European-built urban and suburban commuter.

Design

The exterior styling of the ë-C3 has a chunky, small-SUV aesthetic. It features a very upright nose showing the retro-inspired oval Citroën badge, flanked by distinctive C-shaped LED headlights. Its roofline rises significantly higher than a standard supermini to provide a more headroom for the rear passengers. The rugged look is enhanced by contrasting roof options, prominent plastic wheel arches, and functional, aerodynamic roof bars capable of carrying up to 75kg of load. Personalisation plays a key role, with interchangeable plastic trim clips available for the rear pillars and front bumper.

Interior

The cabin focuses on a bright, airy design that avoids the bleak, budget feel typical of low-cost cars. It uses a split-level dashboard layout wrapped in textured woven fabric inserts to disguise the hard, durable plastics found lower down. The driver's display is integrated into a slim, shelf at the base of the windscreen, keeping vital information directly in the line of sight. The layout prioritises usability by retaining physical buttons and toggle switches for the heating and ventilation controls rather than burying them in a screen. Seating comfort is a major highlight, utilizing squishy yet highly supportive Advanced Comfort seats that feature extra foam padding to minimise fatigue on longer journeys.

Performance & Powertrains

Power is delivered via a front-mounted electric motor producing 111bhp and 124Nm of torque, enabling a 0-62mph acceleration time of roughly 11 seconds and a top speed of 84mph. The ë-C3 is available with two battery choices. The entry-level Urban Range variant features a 30kWh battery pack delivering a range of 132 miles. The Standard Range variant upgrades to a larger 44kWh battery pack, pushing the range up to 202 miles. The car uses a unique Advanced Comfort suspension setup with progressive hydraulic cushions. This allows the primary springs and dampers to soak up harsh urban potholes and speed bumps with a pillowy, soft ride quality while retaining composed body control through corners. Charging is excellent for the price, supporting 100kW DC rapid charging, on the bigger battery, that replenishes the battery from 20% to 80% in 26 minutes, while the urban range model is capped at just 30kW.

Practicality

Thanks to the tall, boxy proportions and high roofline, the ë-C3 maximizes its compact footprint to provide impressive interior passenger space. Both front and rear occupants benefit from generous headroom, and the raised seating position allows for easy entry and exit. Rear legroom is highly competitive for a small hatchback, easily accommodating adults. The boot provides a generous 310-litre volume with the rear seats upright, beating several more expensive competitors. This space expands up to 1,200 litres when the rear bench is folded down to accommodate larger items, though the seat does leave a small load lip rather than a perfectly flat floor.

Buying

The absolute standout feature of the ë-C3 is its aggressive pricing. With the current manufacture grants, the entry-level Urban Range starts at £18,495. The Standard Range version starts higher at £21,215, while the top-tier Max trim brings the total to £22,315. The EV Hub recommended configuration is the Standard Range model in the Collection trim. This combination maximizes the value proposition by providing the full 202-mile range alongside a robust equipment list. It includes 17-inch alloy wheels, a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen, automatic LED headlights, rear parking sensors, and the full suite of Advanced Comfort suspension and seating.
