Overview
The MGS5 EV replaces the old MG ZS EV in MG's lineup, taking up a critical spot in the competitive C-segment family crossover market. Built on the Modular Scalable Platform shared with the MG4 EV, the MGS5 EV brings a purpose-built electric architecture to the brand's compact electric SUV. Positioned directly against established rivals such as the Hyundai KONA Electric, Vauxhall Frontera, and BYD Atto 3 Evo, the MGS5 brings sharp dynamic handling, efficient packaging, and high standard equipment levels to offer a compelling value proposition.
Design
Moving away from the converted combustion platform look of its predecessor, the MGS5 EV adopts MG's newer global design language. The front is clean and aerodynamic with slim, split LED headlights and lower intake active grilles that reduce drag. Standard 18-inch alloy wheels featuring aerodynamic covers that sit flush against sculpted wheel arches, while sharp shoulder lines run the length of the body to give the car an athletic stance. At the rear, a continuous light bar spans the width of the tailgate, mirroring the front and giving the SUV a distinctly presence on the road. Integrated silver roof rails and flush door handles round out the sleek exterior.
Interior
The cabin presents a major leap forward in material quality and digital functionality compared to older electric MG models. Taking center stage is a 12.8-inch HD touchscreen infotainment system running an updated software with wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, and integrated native apps like Spotify and YouTube. Drivers are provided with a customisable 10.25-inch digital display. Ergonomics are cleanly laid out, featuring a floating center console with an integrated wireless phone charging tray and over 33 storage compartments distributed throughout the cabin. Material selection includes durable PVC upholstery with cloth inserts on base variants, upgrading to synthetic leather surfaces and a panoramic sunroof on higher trim levels.

Performance & Powertrains
Underpinned by a RWD arrangement, the MGS5 EV offers two primary battery and motor options built on a 400V electrical architecture. The Standard Range utilises a 49kWh LFP battery paired with a rear-mounted 125 kW electric motor. This configuration delivers an entry-level driving range of 211 miles. The Long Range features a 64 kWh battery coupled with a 170 kW electric motor delivering 350 Nm of torque. This powertrain achieves a 0-62 mph time of 6.3 seconds and a range of up to 298 miles. DC rapid charging speeds reach up to 139 kW for the larger battery, enabling a 10% to 80% recharge in approximately 28 minutes. Chassis refinement is aided by a 50:50 weight distribution, a low center of gravity, and a five-link rear independent suspension setup designed to balance ride comfort and body control. Vehicle-to-Load capability is standard, providing up to 3.3 kW AC power output for external devices.
Practicality
Thanks to the flat floor from the dedicated MSP EV platform, the MGS5 EV offers significantly improved interior space compared to the older ZS EV. Rear passenger space is generous, with increased headroom and knee room made possible by the 2,730 mm wheelbase. Boot capacity measures 453 litres with the rear seats in place, expanding to a maximum of 1,441 litres when the rear seats are folded down. Practical features include an adjustable boot floor, and an available hands-free power tailgate on higher trims, however there is no frunk under the bonnet.
Buying
Pricing for the MGS5 EV starts at £28,495 for the entry-level SE Standard Range, rising to £31,495 for the SE Long Range, and topping out at £33,995 for the Trophy Long Range. Standard equipment across all trims includes the full MG Pilot suite of driving assists, 18-inch alloy wheels, the 12.8-inch touchscreen, wireless phone mirroring, and keyless entry. Upgrading to the Trophy trim adds synthetic leather upholstery, a 360-degree HD surround-view camera, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a wireless smartphone charger, and a power tailgate. The EV Hub recommended configuration is the MGS5 EV Trophy Long Range. The jump to the 64 kWh battery unlocks the full 298-mile range, faster charging capability, and superior acceleration, while the Trophy trim adds high-value everyday features like the 360-degree camera system and powered tailgate.
