Overview

The Toyota Proace Max Electric marks Toyota's entry into the heavy commercial vehicle market, completing their commercial lineup. Developed in partnership with Stellantis, the Proace Max Electric shares its core architecture with models such as the Fiat E-Ducato and Peugeot E-Boxer, but carves out its own identity through distinct branding and market positioning. Competing directly in the 3.5-tonne and 4.25-tonne heavy van sectors against established rivals like the Ford E-Transit and Renault Master E-Tech, the Proace Max Electric targets fleet operators and businesses needing high volume, zero-emission transport. Toyota leverages its extensive commercial dealer network and market-leading warranty package to offer exceptional peace of mind and low long-term running costs.

Design

Exterior styling on the Toyota Proace Max Electric takes a functional approach, tailored for commercial durability. The front features Toyota's signature commercial vehicle aesthetic, incorporating a bold upper grille block topped by the prominent chrome ellipse badge. A deeply sculpted front bumper houses durable black plastic cladding, designed to resist minor scuffs and urban impact damage. Flanking the front structure are sharp, modern headlamps featuring daytime running light signatures that elevate the vehicle's road presence. Along the sides, broad protective rubbing strips run the full length of the bodywork. The vehicle retains clean, slab-sided flanks optimized for business livery and signage. The rear end is defined by vertical tail-lamp clusters and twin rear doors that open up to 270 degrees on selected configurations, ensuring effortless loading against tight urban loading bays.

Interior

Inside the cabin, the Proace Max Electric balances hard-wearing commercial utility with modern tech. The dashboard is made from tough, easy-to-clean plastics built to withstand rigorous daily use. Directly in front of the driver sits a HD digital instrument cluster. The centre console is dominated by a crisp 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto alongside integrated satellite navigation. Seating is arranged as a three-across bench, with the outer driver's seat featuring multi-way manual adjustment and a fold-down armrest. Storage solution engineering includes expansive door pockets, overhead shelf storage, an under-seat compartment, and a dash-mounted gear selection dial that frees up footwell space for the central passenger.

Performance & Powertrains

Power comes from a single front-mounted electric motor delivering a potent peak output of 270 hp and 410 Nm of torque. Energy is stored in a large 110 kWh battery pack mounted beneath the floor, keeping a low center of gravity low. The Proace Max Electric achieves an impressive range of up to 261 miles on a full charge. DC fast-charging supports rates up to 150 kW, recharging the battery from 10 to 80% in approximately 55 minutes. On the road, the instant electric torque enables rapid acceleration from standstill, while adjustable regenerative braking via paddle shifters aids efficiency in stop-and-go city traffic.

Practicality

Load-carrying capability is a central highlight of the Proace Max Electric. Because the battery architecture is positioned low within the chassis, internal load volume remains uncompromised compared to combustion variants. Depending on the L3 or L4 body length and H2 or H3 height, cargo volumes range from a generous 13 cubic metres up to a massive 17 cubic metres. The wide rear door opening and low loading height ensure easy access for forklifts and manual loading. Between the rear wheel arches, the load bay spans 1,422 mm, easily accommodating up to four standard Euro pallets. Maximum payload capacity reaches up to 1,500 kg on suitable gross vehicle weight specifications, while the van retains a maximum braked towing capacity of up to 2,400 kg.

Buying

The Toyota Proace Max Electric carries a starting price of roughly £60,000 before VAT and applicable government plug-in van grants. Standard equipment includes automatic air conditioning, keyless entry, automatic LED lighting, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear parking sensors, and a digital rear-view mirror system. The EV Hub recommended configuration is the long wheelbase L3H2 panel van in Icon trim. This setup balances the maximum 1,500 kg payload capacity with optimal maneuverability and practical load volume, providing the ideal specification for multi-drop delivery fleets and trade professionals.
