Overview

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 N establishes a completely new benchmark for performance EVs, shifting the focus from straight-line acceleration to genuine engagement. Positioned at the pinnacle of the brand's electric line-up, it builds upon the standard model's E-GMP platform with a structural and mechanical transformation by the N performance division. It acts as a highly specialized, track-ready alternative to conventional performance cars.

Design

The exterior design transitions the retro-futuristic styling of the standard crossover into a much more aggressive stance. The body sits 20mm lower, while flared wheel arches expand the overall width by 51mm to accommodate a significantly wider track. The front end features an N-specific masking with an additional functional intake mesh, enhanced cooling flaps, and a prominent front splitter designed to channel airflow to the upgraded thermal management system. At the rear, the vehicle features a prominent spoiler alongside an integrated gloss-black diffuser, extending the overall length by 80mm compared to the standard model. Forged 21-inch aluminium wheels wrapped in custom-developed 275-section Pirelli P-Zero tyres fill out the arches, accented by a signature luminous red stripe running along the lower bodywork.

Interior

The cabin undergoes a driver-focused overhaul to reinforce its sporting credentials, anchored by a set of low-slung N bucket seats finished in Alcantara and leather that feature illuminated N emblems. A bespoke, chunkier N steering wheel dominates the driver's environment, hosting dedicated buttons for custom drive modes alongside the N Grin Boost paddle. The centre console is completely redesigned, adding fixed knee pads and side supports to stabilise the driver during cornering, replacing the sliding unit found in the standard car. Technology is driven by dual 12.3-inch screens that run an N-exclusive infotainment interface, offering additional menus for torque distribution, battery pre-conditioning, and custom performance profiles.

Performance & Powertrains

The dual-motor AWD powertrain uses a high-density 84kWh battery that outputs a continuous 601hp. Activating the N Grin Boost function increases the current via a two-stage rear inverter, swelling the maximum output to 641hp and 770 Nm of torque for 10-second bursts. This enables a 0-62 mph sprint time of 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 161 mph, while the range is rated at 278 miles. Charging relies on an 800V electrical architecture, supporting peak DC rapid charging speeds of up to 240kW, which can replenish the battery from 10% to 80% in approximately 18 minutes. The N e-Shift system digitally simulates an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission with physical torque drop-offs and paddle shifters, synchronised with an N Active Sound system that recreates combustion engine sounds.

Practicality

The vehicle retains the core architectural versatility of the standard model. The boot delivers 480 litres of luggage volume with the rear seats upright, expanding to 1,540 litres when the 60:40 split-folding rear bench is dropped down flat. The massive 3,000-millimetre wheelbase guarantees excellent legroom and headroom for adult occupants in both rows. The inclusion of a standard heat pump preserves cabin climate efficiency during cold weather, and an integrated Vehicle-to-Load system provides a domestic plug socket under the rear seats to power external electrical devices.

Buying

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 N is available as a single, fully loaded trim level priced from £65,800. The comprehensive standard equipment leaves very few options on the table, including the 21-inch forged wheels, Bose premium sound system, matrix LED headlights, and the full suite of active safety and driver assistance features. The EV Hub recommended configuration adds the optional panoramic glass roof to better cabin brightness without compromising the underlying track-honed dynamics.
