Overview

The Cupra Raval VZ enters the market as a high-performance electric hot hatch, designed to serve as the sharp-handling alternative within the Volkswagen Group's compact EV family alongside the Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI. Utilizing the FWD MEB+ platform, the Raval distinguishes itself through an focus on driving dynamics and sporty positioning. The range-topping VZ trim transforms the practical packaging of a standard city-biased car into a dedicated electric hot hatch, directly targeting rivals such as the Alpine A290 and targeted urban enthusiasts who prioritize driver engagement.

Design

Measuring 4.05 metres long, 1.78 metres wide, and 1.51 metres tall, the Raval VZ has compact exterior dimensions but amplifies its stance through a 10mm wider track and a 15mm lower ride height compared to standard variants. The front fascia adopts Cupra's aggressive Sharknose style, anchored by sharp body creases and complex Tri-LED Matrix headlights. The side profile incorporates clean lines balanced by flush-mounted, illuminated door handles that automatically pop out when unlocked. At the rear, an integrated aerodynamic diffuser sits beneath a full-width lightbar and illuminated Cupra badge, while the VZ Extreme specification rides on large 19-inch Rebel alloy wheels wrapped in 235/40 R19 performance tyres.

Interior

The cabin is heavily driver-centric and ergonomic with a tech-forward layout, higher-grade materials and bold ambient lighting. Drivers sit in bolstered, 3D-knitted Cup-Bucket sports seats rapped in sustainable vegan leather and Dinamica microfibre. Infotainment is handled by a prominent central touchscreen that supports wireless smartphone connectivity, though it retains the touch-sensitive sliders for climate and volume control. Sound is handled by an optional 475W, 12-speaker Sennheiser AMBEO immersive sound system linked with Cupra's Next-Gen Smartlight, which synchronizes the lights inside the cabin with audio inputs and drive modes.

Performance & Powertrains

The Raval VZ is powered by a front-mounted electric motor delivering 222bhp and 290Nm of torque, enabling a 0-62mph acceleration time of 6.8 seconds and a top speed capped at 109mph. This draws energy from a 52kWh allowing the high-performance VZ to achieve a range of up to 239 miles. The chassis combines an electronic limited-slip differential on the front axle with Dynamic Chassis Control suspension. For charging, the VZ supports a maximum speed of 105kW.

Practicality

By utilizing a 2.6-metre wheelbase and pushing the wheels to the very corners of the chassis, passenger space in the front of the cabin is very generous for a vehicle of this size. Rear seating is tighter but remains fully usable, providing better knee clearance than its rival, the Alpine A290, though it lacks a fold-down central armrest. Luggage space is a strength, offering a class-leading 441-litre boot capacity. This volume includes a dedicated moveable underfloor storage partition designed to isolate charging cables from regular luggage, providing a larger total boot area than a standard Volkswagen Golf despite a shorter overall vehicle body length. Rear visibility is partially restricted by thick rear C-pillars, making the standard rear parking sensors and top-view cameras crucial for urban parking.

Buying

Prices for the Cupra Raval VZ starts from £34,995, while the higher-trim VZ Extreme sits at the top of the range with a starting price of £36,310. This pricing places the vehicle as a premium, size-specific alternative to larger hatchbacks rather than an entry-level budget option, backed by an included five-year or 90,000-mile manufacturer warranty. The EV Hub recommended configuration is the Cupra Raval VZ Extreme. This makes full use of the hot-hatch intentions through the mechanical electronic locking differential, the Dynamic Chassis Control adaptive suspension, and the upgraded 19-inch performance wheels alongside the highly supportive 3D-knitted bucket seats and the Sennheiser AMBEO premium sound.
