Overview
The Volkswagen ID.4 is the German brand's core entry in the competitive mid-size electric crossover market, competing directly against rivals such as the Tesla Model Y, Hyundai IONIQ 5, and Skoda Enyaq. Built on the dedicated MEB electric architecture, it serves as an accessible family SUV that prioritises comfort, occupant space, and straightforward usability over sportiness. Available in RWD and dual-motor AWD configurations, the ID.4 sits as an anchor in Volkswagen's electric ID line-up.
Design
Visually, the ID.4 incorporates a clean aesthetic that balances a modern electric footprint with traditional SUV proportions. The exterior is defined by a blanked-off front grille area flanked by full-width LED light bars and adaptive LED matrix headlights on higher trims. Flush-fitting door handles, soft shoulder lines, and a high waistline give the car a substantial presence on the road. At the rear, a continuous light bar spans the tailgate. A subtle roof-mounted spoiler aids aerodynamic efficiency. Wheel choices range from 19-inch steel or alloy rims on entry models up to 21-inch alloy wheels on the sport-focused GTX variant.
Interior
The cabin follows a minimalist design language dominated by digital displays. The dashboard features a 12.9-inch central infotainment touchscreen alongside a compact digital driver display attached directly to the steering column. Material quality includes soft-touch synthetic fabrics on key contact points, though harder plastics remain visible on lower door panels and lower console areas. Standard interior features include illuminated temperature and volume slider controls beneath the main screen, voice control, and ambient lighting. Steering wheel functions utilise touch-sensitive haptic pads rather than physical buttons, which can hinder their usability. The column-mounted gear selector frees up central space for cupholders and deep storage cubbies.

Performance & Powertrains
The ID.4 offers three primary powertrain setups tailored to different range and performance needs. The entry-level Pure trim features a 52kWh battery paired with a rear-mounted motor producing 167hp, delivering a 0-62mph acceleration time of 9.0 seconds and a range of up to 223 miles. Upgrading to the 77kWh battery in the Pro configuration introduces an upgraded rear motor, outputting 282hp and 545Nm of torque. This version completes the 0-62mph sprint in 6.7 seconds and delivers a maximum range of up to 347 miles. The range-topping dual-motor GTX adds a front electric motor for AWD, generating a combined 335hp, accelerating from 0-62mph in 5.4 seconds, and providing a range of up to 317 miles. Maximum DC fast-charging rates reach up to 115kW for the 52kWh battery and up to 175kW for the 77kWh pack, allowing a 10-80% charge in approximately 28 minutes. On the road, the chassis is set up to deliver a supple, comfortable ride, suppressing road imperfections well while maintaining predictable handling through light steering, though body lean is noticeable during spirited cornering.
Practicality
Thanks to the packaging advantages of its flat-floor electric platform, the ID.4 yields impressive interior space for five occupants. Rear legroom and headroom are generous, accommodating tall adults with ease across the seats. Boot capacity stands at 543 litres with the rear seats in place, expanding to 1,575 litres when the 60/40 split-folding rear seats are dropped. The luggage compartment features a broad opening, though it carries a slight load lip. Storage under the boot floor accommodates charging cables, but the ID.4 lacks a frunk storage area.
Buying
The Volkswagen ID.4 range starts at £36,995 for the entry-level Pure trim, while the long-range Pro spec begins at £43,200, rising to over £52,000 for the top-spec GTX. Trim levels follow Volkswagen's structured hierarchy, starting with Pure Match, progressing through Pro Match, and ending at GTX. standard equipment across the range includes keyless start, three-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, and heated front seats. The EV Hub recommended configuration is the Pro Match specification paired with the 77kWh battery. This option delivers the ideal balance of everyday usability, striking a sweet spot with its punchy 282hp motor and an range of 347 miles, avoiding the unnecessary expense and reduced range of the twin-motor GTX models.
