Overview

The Mercedes-AMG CLA Electric is a high-performance compact four-door saloon that represents a monumental shift for Affalterbach's iconic tuning division. Built on the advanced 800V Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture, this full-electric model trades traditional combustion engines for high-density battery technology and axial-flux electric motors. Positioned above the standard Mercedes-Benz CLA line-up, the AMG CLA EV targets performance enthusiasts seeking a blend of everyday practicality, zero-emissions driving, and genuine track capability. It bridges the gap between usable luxury and hyper-saloon performance, setting a benchmark for compact electric performance cars.

Design

Exterior aesthetics are defined by low, aggressive proportions and purposeful aerodynamics. The front end drops the horizontal light strip of the standard CLA in favour of an AMG-specific radiator panel with ten vertical struts and slim LED headlamps. Functional active aerodynamics play a significant role, incorporating active radiator fins in the front bumper that remain closed at speeds up to 155 mph to optimize airflow, along with a deployable rear spoiler that adjusts to increase downforce or reduce drag. Frameless side windows, flush door handles, and exclusive 19-inch AMG light-alloy wheels over massive high-performance brake callipers complete the athletic profile.

Interior

Inside, the cabin strikes a balance between race-inspired elements and sophisticated digital interfaces. The focal point is the optional full-width MBUX Superscreen, housing digital instrument displays, a central infotainment screen, and a dedicated passenger display running the MB.OS software. Driver engagement is reinforced by an AMG Performance twin-spoke steering wheel featuring rotary drive controls. Deeply contoured AMG sports seats upholstered in synthetic leather and microfiber provide strong lateral support during high-G cornering. Material quality is generally excellent throughout the upper dashboard and door cards, complemented by 64-colour ambient lighting and real carbon-fibre trim inlays, though the lower cabin plastics are shared with the standard CLA family.

Performance & Powertrains

Underneath the skin, the AMG CLA 45 utilizes three ultra-compact axial-flux electric motors, one mounted on the front axle and two at the rear. The setup produces a combined output of 680 hp and 1,297 Nm of torque, enabling 0-62 mph in 2.7 seconds and a top speed limited to 168 mph. Power is fed by a 94kWh battery. The 800V architecture allows peak DC rapid charging at speeds up to 330 kW, boosting 10 to 80% in 22 minutes or adding 167 miles of range in 10 minutes. The range is rated at up to a very impressive 416 miles. On the road, adaptive three-way AMG Ride Control steel suspension keeps body roll tight, while the variable all-wheel-drive system enables full torque vectoring across the rear axle. Drivers can also activate the AMGFORCE S+ sound-and-gearshift synthesizer to emulate classic mechanical shifts and engine noises.

Practicality

Despite its focus on performance, the AMG CLA Electric retains solid everyday usability. Rear cargo space offers 405 litres of boot capacity, accessed via a wide boot opening. Complementing the rear boot is a 101-litre frunk, which is ideal for storing charging cables and small bags. Passenger accommodation upfront is generous, with highly adjustable seating and plenty of elbow room. The sweeping coupe-style roofline compromises rear passenger space slightly, meaning taller adults will find headroom limited in the back row. Cabin storage is well thought out, including large door bins, a split-opening central armrest, and a floating centre console housing twin cupholders and a wireless smartphone charging pad.

Buying

Prices for the Mercedes-AMG CLA Electric start at £66,750 for the standard Touring Edition, climbing to £78,300 for the Premium Plus trim. Base equipment includes adaptive LED headlights, 19-inch wheels, the MBUX Superscreen array, and adaptive suspension. The EV Hub recommended configuration is the Touring Edition. Over the standard CLA, this adds the upgraded track telemetry logging system, a Race drive mode, larger carbon-ceramic front brakes, and a optional 400V DC charging converter to ensure seamless rapid-charging compatibility across all networks.
