The Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI represents a monumental shift for the iconic hot hatch formula, marking the first time Volkswagen has given the legendary GTI treatment to a fully electric production vehicle. Built on the FWD MEB+ platform, the ID. Design
Visually separated from the standard ID. Polo, the GTI variant introduces aggressive, aerodynamic enhancements that pay homage to 50 years of GTI lineage. Up front, the vehicle features a deeper front bumper with honeycomb-patterned air intakes, integrated cornering lights, and the signature red trim strip running beneath the IQ.Light Matrix LED headlamps. The stance is lower and wider than the base hatchback, highlighted by sculpted side sills and pronounced wheel arches housing bespoke 19-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels. Around the rear, a distinct motorsport-inspired roof spoiler works with an aerodynamic lower diffuser. Classic red GTI badging adorns the front grille area, side wings, and tailgate, stating its intentions without overcomplicating the clean profile.
Interior
Inside, the cabin balances digital minimalism with retro-inspired GTI design cues. The sports seats feature a modern interpretation of the iconic tartan fabric upholstery, paired with integrated headrests and contrasting red stitching across the cabin. A sports steering wheel features physical controls alongside a dedicated GTI drive mode selector. Digital architecture consists of a 10.0-inch digital instrument cluster and a 13.0-inch central infotainment display. Volkswagen has reintroduced physical controls beneath the central screen for a much-needed ergonomics upgrade. A key highlight of the software is the selectable historic graphic mode, which allows the digital gauges and media system to replicate the classic layout of the original Mk1 Golf GTI.
Performance & Powertrains
Power comes from a single front-mounted electric motor producing 226 hp. Power is transmitted via a specialized electronic front-axle differential lock designed to optimize traction and mitigate understeer during cornering. The sprint from 0 to 62 mph is completed in 6.8 seconds, with top speed capped at 108 mph. Energy is stored in a 52 kWh NMC battery pack, delivering a range of up to 263 miles. The car supports DC fast charging at speeds up to 105 kW, enabling a 10 to 80% charge in around 24 minutes. Performance is further enhanced by a stiffened sports suspension setup featuring adaptive chassis control dampers, custom anti-roll bars, and synthesized acoustic feedback tuned to mirror an engine.

Despite its focus on driving dynamics, the ID. Polo GTI maintains the spatial advantages inherent of a dedicated EV platform. Packaging the motor over the front axle and laying the battery flat beneath the floor maximizes interior cabin volume. Rear passenger space comfortably accommodates adults, offering generous headroom and legroom for a car measuring roughly 4.05 metres in length. Cargo capacity is exceptionally competitive for the compact segment, offering 441 litres of boot space with the rear seats in place, expanding up to 1,243 litres when the 60/40 split rear bench is folded down flat.
