Overview

The Citroën ë-C4 is a fully electric family hatchback that carves out a distinct niche by blending traditional hatchback proportions with a high-riding crossover design. Positioned as a value-focused entry into the electric vehicle market, it undercuts many standard family-sized EVs on price, competing closely with smaller electric options while delivering the footprint of a larger vehicle. It trades aggressive performance and cutting-edge tech for a focus on everyday comfort and affordability.

Design

The exterior design is a visual blend of a fastback, a hatchback, and a compact SUV. Following its facelift, the front end looks technical, inspired by the Oli concept, featuring an angular headlights and structured LED daytime running lights. These flank the updated, retro-inspired oval logo. The vehicle sits more than 150mm off the ground, enhanced by chunky plastic cladding along the wheel arches and lower sills to give it a rugged feel. At the rear, the roofline slopes smoothly into a coupe-like rear, where the traditional brand badge has been replaced by bold lettering. Standard 18-inch alloy wheels fill the arches, maintaining a balanced stance despite the raised ride height.

Interior

The cabin balances cost-effective material choices with smart ergonomics. Physical dials and buttons are kept for climate control, making adjustments easy whilst driving. Material quality includes soft-touch plastics, accented by metal-effect air vents and a gloss black centre console, though harder plastics remain lower down in the cabin. The digital dashboard is paired with a central infotainment touchscreen that features customizable shortcuts, though the underlying software graphics and processing speeds are basic compared to premium rivals. Storage was a key focus, highlighted by a covered twin cupholder section, a lower phone tray with integrated charging ports, and a pop-out dashboard drawer containing an integrated tablet holder for the front passenger.

Performance & Powertrains

The powertrain lineup is split cleanly across battery capacities and motor outputs, utilizing FWD across all variants. The Standard Range combines a 50kWh battery with a 136hp electric motor. It achieves a 0-62mph time of 9.0 seconds and delivers a range of up to 219 miles. The Extended Range model upgrades this to a 54kWh pack, paired with a more efficient 156hp synchronous motor. This configuration extends the official range up to 257 miles. Charging is identical for both models, supporting rapid charging at 100kW, which replenishes the battery from 10 to 80% in approximately 30 minutes. Driving dynamics are heavily biased toward ride refinement, using a softly sprung suspension setup that dampens cracked tarmac and urban speed bumps far more effectively than stiffer, sportier rivals.

Practicality

Space inside is highly competitive for a vehicle at this price point. The front can enjoy a wide view through the elevated seating position, backed by a highly adjustable seating and steering wheel. In the rear, legroom is excellent for adults, though the sloping, coupe-style roofline limits headroom for taller people in the back. A central transmission tunnel reduces foot room for a middle passenger. The boot delivers a flat loading lip and offers 380 litres of cargo space, which expands significantly when the split-folding rear seats are dropped. Rear visibility is somewhat restricted due to the split rear window and thick C-pillars, though parking sensors really help in tight spaces.

Buying

The model lineup is structured across two trim tiers. It starts with Plus at £28,715. The entry point to the range, offering essential equipment alongside the 50kWh Standard Range powertrain. The top of the range is the Collection model at £30,995 which comes with the bigger 54kWh Extended Range powertrain, alongside a two-tone roof, keyless entry, heated seats, and adaptive cruise control. The EV Hub Recommended Configuration is the bigger-battery Collection version. This upps the range, adds very useful features, all for just an extra £2,280 over the Plus trim.
