Overview
The Deepal S05 is a compact electric SUV that expands Changan's dedicated EV brand into a highly competitive global market. Positioned just below the larger S07, the S05 aims to blend accessible electric driving with advanced tech, offering a compelling entry point for drivers looking to transition to zero-emission transport.
Design
The exterior design of the Deepal S05 leans heavily into modern, minimalist styling characterized by smooth surfaces and clean lines. Upfront, it features a split-headlight design with slim upper daytime running lights and a closed-off grille to maximize aerodynamic efficiency. Flush-fitting door handles, a gently sloping roofline, and a distinctive full-width LED rear light bar give the vehicle a sleek, premium presence on the road while optimizing its aerodynamic profile.
Interior
Inside, the cabin is dominated by a minimalist dashboard layout centered around a massive, HD floating infotainment touchscreen. Material quality is notably premium for the segment with soft-touch materials and textured panels rather than harsh plastics. True to its minimalist layout, traditional physical buttons are almost entirely absent, with vehicle functions, climate controls, and media all managed directly through the central display or via the limited steering wheel controls.

Performance & Powertrains
The entry-level Deepal S05 utilizes a single rear-mounted electric motor producing 286 bhp, which delivers responsive acceleration and an agile driving experience. Upgrading to the AWD powertrain decreased the 0-62mph time to 5.5 seconds. Both are paired with a 69kWh battery, providing a range of 301 or 278 miles, depending on the version. The DC fast charging is surprisingly impressive, allowing the battery to replenish at 200kW or from 10% to 80% in around 30 minutes.
Practicality
Built on a dedicated electric architecture, the S05 maximizes its interior footprint to provide generous cabin space. Rear passengers benefit from a completely flat floor and excellent legroom, making it comfortable for three adults. Storage is well thought out, featuring a spacious main boot with a wide opening and low load lip, flat-folding rear seats for hauling larger items, and a huge frunk under the bonnet to store charging cables and more.
Buying
In terms of market positioning, the Deepal S05 is priced to challenge established mid-size electric crossovers like the Renault Scenic or Skoda Elroq, with the RWD model starting at £37,990 and increasing to £39,990 for the AWD version. It comes well-equipped from the base model, offering comprehensive driver-assistance systems and over-the-air software updates. The EV Hub recommended configuration is the RWD Max trim, which keeps the longest 301-mile range without increasing the price unnecessarily.
